When Spring Seems Long in Coming

Geese flying in formation overhead, gliding in southward breezes.  Brisk winds calling them away.  The Creator whispering directions, warm, safe harbor waiting their yearly return.

Hard, oval bulbs held while colored leaves flutter downwards.  Promises trapped by shells refusing to unveil in crisp afternoon sunlight.  Everything is beautiful in its time.

Kneeling in cool, black dirt, pressing pointed spade into dark places.  Empty holes yearning for filling, inviting hard promises to find rest.

Bulbs gently placed in beds, softened soil.

Spade covering bulbs with dirty blankets.  Protection against winter winds, layers of snow piling high.  Freezing, white world covering life markers.

Hidden deep, bulbs sleep without stirring.

Winter wanders long, cold refusing to loosen its grip.  Fresh, white sheets spread, layers rising ever heavenward.  Icy patterns drawn on windows cast shadows on wooden kitchen floors.

Buried promises unseen, almost forgotten.

Snow melting, threads knitting together into water scarves.  Brown stripes in white fabric stretching to the horizon.  Wild turkeys pecking thawing ground searching for sustenance, lean winter months bringing hunger.  Bare ground offering hope.

Bulbs feeling warmth from the Farmer’s hand, stir beneath His touch.  Breaking open like the tomb on Easter morning.

White landscape changing to brown, finally green.  Winter blown away, world springing to life.   Birds chirping in budding trees.  Chipmunks scampering in sunshine.

Tiny green shoots push through garden soil.

Promises emerging quietly, shyly.

Warming earth pushes stems higher, straining towards the sun.  One morning a kaleidoscope of color waves in filtered sunlight, long awaited.  Flowers released, throwing off trappings of darkness.

Life winters feel hard, dark.  The Father splatters promises of hope through His Word.  Promises of flowers on pitch nights, answers to winter prayers.

I will never leave you nor forsake you.  (Joshua 1:5)

He will swallow up death forever.  (Isaiah 25:8)

Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you, declares the Lord.  (Jeremiah 1:8)

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  (John 14:27)

The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.  (Zephaniah 3:17)

My Lord singing over me, in my darkness.  He knows spring is coming, He is the Creator of seasons of life.

His grace makes everything beautiful in its time.
