Beyond Kitchen Duty


Preparing healthy and delicious meals for my family is a great joy and responsibility.  It definitely takes planning and thought, but it is worth it.  Every person in the family eats everything I place on the table.

I explained to each child before they could even understand what I was saying, “Mommy will make great food for you.  You will love almost everything I serve you.  But even if you don’t, you will eat it.”   They had to understand early in life that they don’t live at a restaurant where they can order whatever they want.

Weekly I serve some dishes we eat often and others we’ve never tried.  We love food from China, Ethiopian, Mexico, Korea, Thailand, Morocco, and the Middle East.  We talk about the countries where the recipes come from.  We sometimes read small portions of Operation World which gives facts about the countries along with prayer requests.

I know the stress of being a mom of a busy family.  And yet I truly believe that I don’t have to compromise quality of food as we rush out the door.  Many thick soups can be served as an afternoon snack or enjoyed while sitting on the sidelines.  Healthy food pays enormous dividends in physical and mental abilities.

I want to share with you some of our family’s favorite recipes.  There is now a tab on the main page of my blog with recipes.  I will post new recipes every week that I hope will inspire you.

I’ve experienced in my own life that doing the daily activities (cooking, cleaning, laundry) with excellence is truly serving Jesus.

  1. Hi Jane! I forwarded this onto three friends..including Lauren Adams! I am having trouble posting a comment today but I wanted to tell you that I am so glad you wrote about this. Nutrition is something that for the last year I have been very passionate about. I believe that food should fuel you and not just fill you. Kid’s taste buds are harder to please then most adults but we are always trying to find healthy options. Especially on soccer days! I will look forward to seeing your recipes!
